Rivian R2 Paint Protection Done Right in Las Vegas

Rivian R2 paint protection was the focus of a recent build we completed at our indoor Henderson facility, and this one was a good showcase of how a full protection package should come together on a brand-new EV before the Las Vegas desert gets a chance at the paint.

The R2 is Rivian’s newest and most anticipated model, and this one rolled into our bays in white with black lower cladding, black multi-spoke wheels and yellow brake calipers — all factory spec, none of it work we did. What we did do was take the car through every stage of protection, in the order that actually matters.

Why Exterior Detail and Paint Correction Come First

The work on this R2 started with a full exterior detail — a wash and decontamination pass that strips the paint down to bare, clean surface. Even a brand-new vehicle picks up film, tar and industrial fallout in transport, and none of that can be left under film or coating.

From there we moved into paint correction. New paint still shows up with transport marring, wash-induced swirl and dealer-prep marks. Once film or ceramic coating goes on top, whatever imperfections are already there get sealed in permanently. Correcting the surface first is the only way to make sure what’s underneath the protection is actually flawless. Under our hexagon LED ceiling, you can see just how crisp and undistorted the reflections sit across the hood and doors once correction is done — that clarity is the whole point of doing it before anything else.

Rivian R2 Paint Protection Starts at the Front End

With the paint corrected, we installed paint protection film on the frontal impact areas — the panels that take the brunt of rock chips and road debris on Las Vegas freeways. This is the part of Rivian R2 paint protection that does the physical work: film is a sacrificial layer that absorbs impacts before they reach the clear coat.

Ceramic Coating Over Film, Paint, and Glass

Once the film had cured, we applied a 5-year ceramic coating across all of the exterior paint — including the panels the PPF didn’t cover — and across every piece of exterior glass. This is where our shop’s usual explanation actually holds up: PPF is like a jacket, ceramic coating is like sunscreen. The film stops impacts; the coating makes the whole car easier to wash, resist water spotting, and shrug off UV.

These two services aren’t competing with each other. Coating over the PPF protects the film’s own finish and gloss, while coating over the bare paint on the rest of the car adds the same water beading and UV resistance everywhere the film doesn’t reach. In a high-UV, high-heat climate like ours, that matters on every panel, not just the ones with film on them.

White Paint Hides Grime, But It Still Needs Protection

This R2’s white finish, with its black cladding and yellow calipers, is naturally going to hide swirl marks and road film better than a dark color would. That’s a cosmetic advantage, not a protective one. UV breakdown, rock chips and hard-water etching don’t care what color the paint is, so the correction and coating steps matter just as much on white paint as they would on black.

Ceramic Tint on Every Window, Including the Windshield

We finished with ceramic window tint on every window on the vehicle, including the windshield. Nevada summers push a lot of heat and UV through untinted glass, and in an EV that heat load has a real cost — every degree the cabin doesn’t have to fight is a degree the air conditioning system doesn’t have to pull off the battery. Ceramic film rejects heat and UV without depending on tint depth to do it, which is why it went on the windshield too. The International Window Film Association has a good overview of how window film blocks heat and UV.

The Order Matters as Much as the Products

For any new R2 owner in the valley, this is the sequence we’d recommend before the desert gets a chance at the car:

  • Exterior detail and decontamination
  • Paint correction on the fresh factory paint
  • Front-end PPF on the impact zones
  • Ceramic coating over all paint and glass
  • Ceramic tint on every window

Skip a step or do them out of order and you either lock in imperfections or leave contamination under a coating that’s supposed to last. Rivian R2 paint protection isn’t one product — it’s a sequence, and every stage of this build fed directly into the next.

Stop by our indoor, 15-bay facility at 7585 Commercial Way, Suite G, in Henderson — Valley Auto Mall, across from Lamborghini Henderson — to talk through a protection plan for your own R2 or any new arrival anywhere in the Las Vegas valley.
